Program Summary/Training Goals

The goal of the fellowship is to take a well-trained, three or four year trained surgical resident and advance that person’s skills to a level of a seasoned attending. The fellow will work within a large hospital setting, small hospital setting and surgery center. The Director, who is triple board certified in foot as well as reconstructive rearfoot and ankle surgery. The objectives of the fellowship are to teach the fellow office-based procedures, i.e., total contact cast, office and reconstructive clinic diagnostic workup, utilization of in-office x-ray, ultrasound, and hospital-based advanced imaging. Additionally, the fellow will manage their own wound care clinic patients and oversee the Reconstructive Foot and Ankle Center at St. Mary's General hospital. Staff includes podiatry, orthopaedic, vascular surgical, and plastic surgical attendings. The fellow would be mainly following and training under Dr. Subik’s direct auspices. The fellow would have direct interaction with patient care, including workup, surgical reconstruction and follow-up care. The goal is for limited autonomy of the fellow in his/her interactions with patients, with the oversight in Dr. Subik’s office and reconstrucitve clinic. The fellow would engage in assisting in one of the two residency programs Dr. Subik is a part of, through direct surgical work and scientific presentations. The type of reconstruction would include Charcot foot reconstruction, skin flaps and grafts, ORIF of complex rearfoot and ankle fractures, total ankle joint replacement and highly complex rearfoot reconstruction.
